OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe several common brain changes that occur in Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementi
    1. List the differences between normal and not-normal aging
  2. List several techniques that can be used to improve communication with someone living with dementia
    1. Identify environmental, time use, and verbal interactions to improve client safety

Speaker: BETH A. D. NOLAN, Ph.D., Director of Research and Policy, Lead PAC Speaker, Positive Approach to Care
Beth A. D. Nolan, Ph.D. is from Positive Approach® to Care (PAC), a training and advocacy organization offering techniques used by professionals and families working or living with dementia and other brain changes. Dr. Nolan received her Ph.D. in applied gerontology from the University of Kansas, holds master’s degrees in Human Development and in Applied Behavior Analysis, and completed her post-doctoral training in geriatric psychiatry at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Pittsburgh, PA. She completed her internship with the National Academy of Social Insurance at the Gerontological Society of America’s public policy institute, the National Academy on an Aging Society. As an Assistant Professor and the Senior Associate Director for the Evaluation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health, she worked with a variety of human services agencies to translate and implement evidence-based programs for behavioral health, criminal justice, medicine, and senior living.  Dr. Nolan now serves as the Director of Research and Policy, and is a Lead Mentor and Trainer at PAC, where she works to help move caregivers to become care partners.
