Coding Fundamentals will provide attendees with an overview of how to assign ICD-10-CM codes and review the conventions and coding guidelines. Following coding guidelines is significant for proper sequencing of codes. Specifically designed for the beginner coder, this workshop is appropriate for all staff that is involved in the coding including clinical staff (nursing and therapy), intake, admissions staff, billing staff and clinical managers or a quick review for existing staff. This class may be taught with either a home health or hospice or both focus. Attendees will learn the fundamentals of coding to choose the correct diagnostic code to match the detailed description of the clinical diagnosis.

This 3-part (120 minutes each) series will allow the coder to practice their newly learned skills with ICD-10-CM. Case Scenarios will be coded in class and reviewed with the group. We will discuss the associated coding guidelines, conventions, and principles.
Participants will need to have their ICD-10-CM manuals for class.
Level: Beginners – new or less experienced staff: admissions staff, intake staff, QAPI staff

Objectives:

  • Explore coding conventions & guidelines necessary for proper code assignment.
    • Includes, Excludes, with, NOS, laterality, Sequelae, 7th characters, manifestations
  • Understand the five steps to correctly assign ICD-10 -CM Codes.
    • Learn to successfully navigate the coding book for flawless coding
    • Understand the usage of alphabetic index, tabular list, neoplasm table, table of drugs & chemicals and external cause of injuries index
  • Identify how to code specific diagnostic areas.
    • Reviewed will be common home health areas for example: diabetes, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, therapies and aftercare codes
    • Test your knowledge cases will be used to review each area
  • Gain knowledge & understanding why ICD-10-CM is critical in home health and hospice.

Optional: Competency Exam offered to demonstrate learning to the employer. This 25-question exam will provide you with the confidence needed to continue your career in coding. Cost $39 per person.

Instructor:Joan L. Usher, BS, RHIA, HCS-D, ACE-HH, ACE-H, President, JLU Health Record Systems is a nationally recognized expert in record management. She has a degree in Health Information Management and has been a home health and hospice consultant for over 35 years. Joan is past president of the Massachusetts Health Information Management Association (MaHIMA) and has served as a delegate for American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). She received the Distinguished Member award from MaHIMA in 2017 and the Professional Achievement Award in 2008. Joan is a published author with book topics such as ICD-10-CM Coding, Billing, Clinical Documentation Improvement and contributing author to the Massachusetts Medicolegal Guide. Usher is a current Board of Director of Hospice & Palliative Care of MA and a past Board of Director of the Home Care Alliance of MA.
